Searching My Roots

Like all, at least once in life, everyone is interested in knowing about their origin. Who am I? Who are my ancestors? Is there some well know person among my ancestors? How did my caste came into being? What is the origin of my Caste? I too like others is curious to know about the answers to these question. I know from my school certificate my caste is mentioned as Valluvan and my Sub caste as Valluvapandaram. With these information on hand, I started my search to identify my origin. Google has answer to everything. I entered the keyword Valluvan. The screen popped up the answer. Valluvan are priest and astrologer of the Scheduled Caste in Tamil Nadu. My next keyword was Valluvapandaram again the same description popped up. I entered the books section in google, nothing much I could gain from there.
There were things which made me proud. They were priest of the Pallava kingdom before the advent of Brahmanism. This was the only information that connected Valluvans to a Kingdom. There there were pages and pages mentioning of Thiruvalluvar as a Valluvan.  Thiruvalluvar the great saint. I used to spent a lot of time google searching the keyword Valluvan. A surprising mention was about a king called Nanjil Valluvan. Felt proud, from a king's lineage. wow.
I searched google for anybody with Valluvan as surname. Could found only one that too in Orkut. I created my id in Facebook mentioning Valluvan as my surname. Had a Facebook chat and Telephonic conversation with the only person who to has a surname Valluvan. I tried hard. Seldom thought of having a platform for Valluvan. The harder I worked the more luckier I became. Like me, one more gentleman too with a similar mission contacted me through Facebook. Now, I was not alone. We were Two, oh three. He created a Facebook group for Valluvan. The last time I checked there were more than 600 members.
600 members. Initially what I did was to check for Friend lists of others in Facebook. Scrutinise each and every Friend and try to find out a  Valluvan over there. Then there were matrimony sites where name were available along with photographs. Searched for that person in Facebook added them to my Friend list and Valluvan Group. Searched for their relatives added them. A chain was formed. My Facebook friend too did a similar exercise and also contacted Valluvans personally and through telephone.
Today, I have taken a backseat but the movement is growing. Now, Valluvan meetings are organised in all major districts and cities.
Long live Vallavans
