Thoughts to pounder on...Lord Shiva’s marriage, Tirunelveli, Parashurama Kshetra, Kanyakumari

I always wonder are the mythological stories a myth or it is a fact? Hailing from Tirunelveli, my mind wonders when I read, re-read and think about Lord Shiva’s marriage. The story goes thus; Lord Shiva has invited the whole universe (including gods, goddess, bhootas, aasuras, and others) for his marriage with Goddess Pravati at Mount Kailash. This congregation of large number of invitees unbalanced the earth. To balance the earth, Lord Shiva asked Siddhar (Saint, Rishi) Agastyar to travel to south. Agastyar travelled to Pothigai Hills, which is located in Tirunelveli district, to equal the unbalanced caused by the marriage.

Now, lets’ interfere. In those times Tirunelveli might be the end.  That might be the reason Agastyar travelled to Tirunelveli.

One more from the pages of mythology, Parashurama the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Parashurama after killing five generations of Kshtriyas, threw his blood stain axe from Konkan in now Maharashtra (they are different versions, some story says it is Gokarna in present day Karnataka), and out emerged mass of land right from Konkan to Kanyakumari.

Now, trying to connect these two mythologies, during Lord Shiva marriage Kanyakumari district was not there, else Rishi Agastyar would have landed at some mountain in Kanyakumari to balance the the unbalanced caused by the marriage in earth.

Later on, land mass might have emerged due to geographical phenomena. These land mass after a long battle with the Kshtriyas might have been captured by Parashurama. Later on, he settled his people in these land mass which now extends from Konkan to Kanyakumar (Parashurama Kshetra).

The story of the origin of Sangili Boothathar is associated with Samudra Manthan (the Churning of the Ocean). To get the nectar of immortality (Amrit) from the Sea, Devas and Asuras started churning the Ocean. This happened when the whole Continents were one and the seas too were one. The History of Paraiyan / Paraiyar - An Analysis

Lets get the fact correct. Paraiyans / Paraiyars are not mentioned in the Sangam era as per Wikipedia. The earliest mention of Paraiyan / Paraiyars   / Paraiyars   is in the 11th Century, ie, during the Chola period. It is well documented that Chola kings conquered many territories. Sambavars: Their Journey from 10th Century

  I took a Google search on Sambavar and it was a link I click that lead me to this interesting discovery I did a Google search on Sambavar, and one of the links I clicked led me to this interesting discovery. I came across the earliest recorded person to be identified as belonging to the Sambavar caste. His name is Maharasan Vedamanickam and he was born in 1763 and he died in 1827. His name was Maharasan Vedamanickam. He was born in 1763 and died in 1827. His 55-year lifespan forms the basis of the article.  He was born in present-day Kanyakumari. Paraiyan (Paraiyar) History - Few unknown and known facts

The earliest mention of Paraiyan / Paraiyar is in the 11 th century, ie, during the Chola period. It was during this time Chola power was at its zenith. Chess it is a way of life now

There were many reasons that kept me away from my village. Then one fine day, I landed after 20 years, on my village. On the material front, lots of changes were there, the cycles have been replaced by the scoots, bikes and in some cases by cars too. But, mentally and physically I did not noticed much difference 20 years back and now. Back then for to pass time, youngsters (including me) use to play cards and now too they are playing cards for timepass. Sometime money too in involved. My Fond Memories

It has long been I had not visited my village and finally one fine day in this March I packed my baggage, took a train from Mumbai to my village. Here in this blog I have detailed the then and now scenario of my village as I observed. The mud roads have given way to tar roads. The sarees are now been replaced by nighty. The government school has fewer students, as parents are opting for English medium school. There are plenty of vehicles. Fifty percent of the household have cars / four wheeler, while 100 per cent household have two wheelers, either scooty or bike. Almost all houses have more than two two-wheelers, while in some there are three two-wheelers. There are few houses which are very huge in size. All the houses are well painted. Recently while travelling in Mumbai's Local Train / Mumbai Suburban Train, I had the opportunity to meet a Tamilian who was sitting beside me.  We had a friendly chat and in the course of the chat, I discovered he is not only from my district but also from a nearby village.
